When Nick was born, his father fainted.
Not out of a pleasant surprise, but from a straightforward shock. Nick Vujicic was born with phocomelia, a rare disorder characterized by the absence of legs and arms.
Today he is a successful speaker whose lectures had been visited by more than three million people in 24 countries.
– Hello, I’m Nick! If someone told you that there are limits, Know that he is lying … because there are none!
These words, spoken by Nick Vujicic, best reflect will and defiance that this genius generated to enter into a battle with life. Without arms and legs, but with a big heart.
He managed to prove what his parents did not believe is possible. He proved he can have a good life, live a decent life! Yet it was not as straightforward. There were difficult moments. Nick was often depressed, several times he even wanted to kill himself. That happened when he was ten years old. He filled the bathtub and wanted to drown himself, but fortunately, he gave up. He stood in front of the tub that was full of water, and then he realized:
These words of this remarkable man can explain the meaning and beauty of life.
“Often people ask how I manage to be happy despite having no arms and no legs. The quick answer is that I have a choice. I can be angry about not having limbs, or I can be thankful that I have a purpose.”
Nick Vujicic who is now one of the world’s most famous motivational speakers, was born with a rare disorder – Tetra-Amelia syndrome, with no arms, no legs, but a strong feeling of purpose.
He was able to help himself and also millions of people around the world to find strength and inspiration, to help people in confronting with their own problems. Nick was born in Melbourne and was the first baby of Borisov and Duska who had left Serbia in 1964 as immigrants. They came to Australia in search of bread. When he was born on December 4, 1982. they were desperate.

There was not a single medical reason that their firstborn has this disorder. What was supposed to be the happiest day of their life turned into the trauma. Although his parents were scared for his future, they did not expect that their son will become a modern superhero and that he will be an inspiration for millions of people around the world. But how could they … His childhood had been filled with countless difficulties and problems. As a boy was constantly praying to God to give him arms and legs … hoping that in the morning when he wakes up he will have elbows, arms, hands and fingers.
By Australian law, it was forbidden to people like Nick to attend school regularly. Despite what has just physical, not a mental deficiency. Only when the law was changed, Nick was one of the first students with disabilities who finished elementary school “Victoria” in Melbourne. For him, getting up on the “left foot” got a whole new meaning, because he had learned to write with only two fingers that he has on the left foot.
But that’s not all. With his left foot, he learned to type on a computer (he can type about 43 words per minute), he can play football, to surf, skateboard, to throw tennis balls, answer the phone …
He graduated in Accounting and Financial Planning when he was 21.
It was not easy at start. Nick had realized that his life story can influence people in a positive way and decided to try to be a motivational speaker. He had first tried to schedule a lecture at a local school and failed. They were not interested. He tried again, without success. He attempted to contact another 50 schools and failed again. Until finally, after numerous attempts, one school did agree. The response was positive and Nick had held his first lecture. All people were crying, from children to teachers.
He realized that maybe he has no arms and legs, but he has a great power. The power of his mind and his will that is more than enough. From that moment, all is history.
Nick has lectured throughout the world, inspiring people to live the life without borders and showing them the way. More than 4.5 million people visited his lectures in 43 countries and across five continents. On one of these lectures, Nick has met his wife, with whom he has two sons.
If a man without arms and legs can dream and makes his dreams a reality, you can do so too. If a man without arms and legs can help another person, you can as well.
“Don’t let your life be controlled by the circumstance. You’re the one who should control your life, no matter what the circumstance is.”
The man who took his physical shortcomings and turned them into amazing advantages, Nick Vujicic lives his life “to the fullest” and inspires physically healthy people to follow the route of joy too.
Joy is the main theme of his seminars. In his native Australia Nick gained the status of a national hero. He is a director of two organizations and a successful writer, who has published several books that became bestsellers.
“My hope is that when people who are in pain see that I have a joyful life, they will think, if Nick – without arms and legs – is thankful, then I will be thankful for today, and I will do my best.” ~ Nicholas James Vujicic
